The Oakland Athletics secured a thrilling 7-6 walk-off victory over the American League-leading Detroit Tigers in 10 innings on Tuesday night in West Sacramento. The game featured dramatic home runs, clutch pitching, and a bases-loaded walk that sealed the win for the Athletics.
Darell Hernaiz drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, bringing home the winning run for Oakland and sparking celebrations among fans and players alike. Jacob Wilson delivered a standout performance with a three-run homer in the first inning and a career-high four RBI. Tyler Soderstrom contributed two hits and two RBI, while Shea Langeliers added three hits, including a double, and scored twice.
Eduarniel Núñez earned his first career MLB win in his eighth appearance after pitching in a high-pressure situation. He replaced Elvis Alvarado in the top of the 10th with runners at the corners and two outs, striking out Javier Báez to end the Detroit threat. Will Vest took the loss for Detroit, surrendering two runs—one earned—on a hit and three walks in the bottom of the 10th, marking his sixth blown save in 25 chances this season.
Riley Greene provided a highlight for the Tigers by blasting a grand slam to center field in the third inning, while Keith tied the game 5-5 with a solo home run in the fifth. Soderstrom’s clutch RBI single in the bottom of the 10th tied the score before the Athletics loaded the bases for Hernaiz’s dramatic walk-off walk.
In the bottom of the 10th, Soderstrom singled to drive in automatic runner Brent Rooker, moving Wilson to second after a walk. Both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Colby Thomas. With two outs, Lawrence Butler walked to load the bases, setting up Hernaiz for the game-winning walk that ended the contest in Oakland’s favor.
Riley Greene's 471-foot grand slam is tied for the second-longest grand slam by a major league player in the Statcast Era (since 2015) and is the longest home run by a Tigers player in that span. The only longer grand slam belongs to Kyle Schwarber, who hit a 473-foot shot for the Chicago Cubs in 2019.
The series continues as Tigers right-hander Casey Mize (12-4, 3.68 ERA) is scheduled to face Athletics right-hander Luis Morales (1-0, 1.72 ERA) on Wednesday.
The Athletics overcame multiple deficits, with notable performances from Jacob Wilson and Tyler Soderstrom, and capitalized on late-inning opportunities to walk off the Detroit Tigers. Riley Greene’s massive grand slam and Eduarniel Núñez’s clutch pitching added to a memorable game that kept fans on the edge of their seats. With this win, Oakland demonstrated resilience against the league-leading Tigers as the series continues.
