TAMPA, Fla. -- The Athletics handed the Tampa Bay Rays a 4-3 loss on Tuesday night, their third straight, thanks to a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning.
The Rays' last three-game skid came against the the Phillies at home in early May. They have now lost four of five to last-place teams.
In the 10th inning, Colby Thomas, who recorded his first career hit earlier in the game, started on second base. He was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Denzel Clarke.
Max Schuemann, batting ninth and starting in place of Jacob Wilson who was a late scratch with a sore right hamstring, worked Mason Montgomery for a walk. This set the stage for pinch-hitter Austin Wynns.
Wynns delivered with a sacrifice fly, scoring Thomas and giving the Athletics the winning run.
Michael Kelly earned the win (2-0) despite allowing two singles and throwing a wild pitch in the ninth inning. Mason Miller secured his 17th save, navigating a tricky ninth inning where he intentionally walked Jonathan Aranda and threw a wild pitch before striking out Brandon Lowe to end the game.
Mason Montgomery took the loss for the Rays, falling to 1-2.
For the Athletics, Max Muncy hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Shea Langeliers added a solo shot in the sixth.
The Rays responded with home runs from Christopher Morel, Brandon Lowe, and Danny Jansen.
Tampa Bay starter Shane Baz had a strong outing, going seven innings and allowing five hits while matching his career high with 11 strikeouts and walking just one batter.
José Caballero, who stole his 30th base in the second inning, singled to lead off the ninth. However, he was caught stealing at second base by Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers on the very next pitch, stifling a potential Rays rally.
With wins in the first two games of the three-game series against the Rays, the Athletics clinched the series, marking their first series win against Tampa Bay since April 2022. This loss also ended the Rays' streak of eight-straight home series wins.
Tampa Bay is scheduled to start RHP Ryan Pepiot (5-6, 3.36 ERA) on Wednesday. The Athletics have not yet named a starting pitcher for the series finale.
