The Miami Marlins delivered a commanding 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals, highlighted by standout performances from Eric Wagaman and Ryan Weathers.
Eric Wagaman powered the Marlins offense with three hits and three RBIs, establishing his presence at the plate. Miami wasted no time, jumping ahead in the first inning with Heriberto Hernández's sacrifice fly and Wagaman’s RBI single off Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore.
Wagaman later sealed the deal with a two-run double in the eighth inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Joey Wiemer. Rookie Jakob Marsee contributed with a double and a single, helping the Marlins split the four-game set and clinch the season series against their NL East rivals, 7-6.
Ryan Weathers, in his first appearance since June 7 due to a left lat strain, shined on the mound for Miami. Weathers allowed only five hits and struck out four over five innings, keeping Washington off the board. Tyler Phillips added two shutout innings in relief, with Ronny Henriquez and Michael Petersen closing out the final frames to complete the shutout.
For Washington, MacKenzie Gore returned from the injured list and pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits. This was his first start since August 30 after recovering from left shoulder inflammation.
In the top of the fourth, Daylen Lile and Andrés Chaparro opened with singles for the Nationals, but Ryan Weathers induced a double play from Brady House and retired Paul DeJong, extinguishing Washington’s potential rally.
Jakob Marsee continues to impress, notching his 15th multi-hit game since his promotion from Triple-A on August 1.
The Nationals return home to begin a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Brad Lord (5-8, 4.20 ERA) starting the opener. The Pirates have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
The Marlins continue their homestand with a three-game series versus the Detroit Tigers. Sandy Alcantara (8-12, 5.67 ERA) will take the mound for Miami in the opener, while Tarik Skubal (13-4, 2.10 ERA) gets the start for Detroit.
The Miami Marlins secured a decisive 5-0 win over the Washington Nationals, with Eric Wagaman leading the offense and Ryan Weathers returning strong to anchor the pitching staff. The Marlins clinched their season series against Washington, boosted by clutch hits and solid pitching. Both clubs now move on to their upcoming three-game series, looking to carry forward the momentum from this matchup.
