DENVER — Tanner Gordon pitched six scoreless innings and Ezequiel Tovar hit a home run to help the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 on Wednesday, securing back-to-back series wins for the first time since Sept. 13-18, 2024.
Gordon (2-2) delivered a strong performance, allowing only four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He was supported by a solid bullpen effort from Jimmy Herget, who pitched two innings of one-hit relief, and Tyler Kinley, who closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The combined effort marked Colorado's first shutout of the season.
The Rockies' offense ignited in the second inning, scoring four runs off St. Louis starter Andre Pallante (5-7) with five consecutive singles. Jordan Beck added an RBI double in the fifth inning, extending Colorado's lead to 5-0. Tovar's solo home run in the eighth inning capped the scoring for the Rockies.
Earlier on Wednesday, Colorado's Germán Márquez, who was scheduled to start, was placed on the 15-day IL due to right biceps tendinitis.
The shutout loss snapped the Cardinals' streak of scoring at least four runs in 11 consecutive games at Coors Field, a run that began when Oliver Marmol became manager in 2021.
The decisive offensive surge occurred in the second inning when Ryan McMahon drew a leadoff walk. After Ezequiel Tovar flied out, the Rockies strung together five consecutive singles from Austin Nola, Kyle Farmer, Adael Amador, Tyler Freeman, and Mickey Moniak, which resulted in a quick 4-0 lead.
Despite being an MLB-worst 22-74 at the All-Star break, Colorado has shown significant improvement, holding a 4-2 record since their return. The Rockies have now won as many series (two) in the short period after the All-Star break as they did in the entire first half of the season.
The St. Louis Cardinals will continue their road trip on Thursday, with Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA) scheduled to pitch against Yu Darvish (0-2, 6.08) in the first of a four-game series against the San Diego Padres. For the Colorado Rockies, Kyle Freeland (2-10, 5.19) is slated to start on Friday at home against the Baltimore Orioles, who have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
