JJ Bleday delivered a standout performance, blasting two home runs as the Oakland Athletics ended their three-game losing streak with an impressive 11-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Zack Gelof contributed a home run among his three hits, sparking the Athletics' offense on a productive Monday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
Starting pitcher Luis Morales improved to 3-0 for the season, holding the Cardinals to two runs on five hits across 5 2/3 innings. Morales also struck out a career-high eight batters. Despite giving up multiple runs for the first time in his six career appearances, he maintained a strong presence on the mound, setting the tone for Oakland.
St. Louis starter Sonny Gray was tagged with his eighth loss of the season after surrendering seven runs on ten hits and three walks in just over six innings. The Cardinals, after a brief three-game winning streak, have now dropped two straight games.
Bleday hit his 12th home run of the season in the sixth inning, extending the Athletics’ lead to 5-1. It marked his second multi-homer game in his career. Earlier, Bleday launched a two-run shot in the fourth inning, immediately followed by a 385-foot home run from Gelof—his second of the season—as Oakland seized momentum with back-to-back homers, a feat they've accomplished three times this year.
Darell Hernaiz started the sixth inning with a double and later scored on a single from Colby Thomas, pushing the score to 4-1. Meanwhile, Brent Rooker went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs to maintain Oakland’s offensive pressure.
Iván Herrera provided the Cardinals’ first run of the game with his 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, but St. Louis was unable to close the gap as the Athletics’ bats stayed hot.
The Athletics seized control in the top of the fourth when Bleday crushed a two-run homer, quickly followed by Gelof's solo blast. These back-to-back home runs gave Oakland a commanding 3-0 lead and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Designated hitter Brent Rooker provided consistent production, finishing with two doubles and three RBIs to assist in the Athletics’ dominant win.
The series continues Tuesday night as Athletics right-hander Luis Severino (6-11, 4.82 ERA) takes the mound against Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas (6-10, 5.04 ERA).
The Oakland Athletics broke their losing streak with an 11-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, led by JJ Bleday’s two home runs and a solid pitching effort from Luis Morales. Back-to-back homers by Bleday and Gelof were pivotal, while Brent Rooker’s three RBIs helped seal the win. The Cardinals were unable to counter, falling for the second consecutive game as the series continues in St. Louis.
