DENVER -- The New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Friday night, thanks to a late-game surge highlighted by a crucial hit from an injured star.
Pinch-hitter Francisco Lindor, playing despite a broken toe, delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the ninth inning. Lindor's line drive off reliever Zach Agnos scored Juan Soto from second base. Pete Alonso added to the play with a skillful slide to avoid the tag at the plate, giving the Mets the decisive 4-2 advantage.
Lindor had been questionable for the series after sustaining a broken right pinky toe when hit by a pitch in Wednesday's game.
Alonso also contributed significantly earlier in the game, hitting a two-run double in the seventh inning. Despite the win, the Mets struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2 of 15 on the night.
The Mets bullpen navigated tense moments. Ryne Stanek earned the win (2-4) after escaping a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the eighth inning. This was aided by an unassisted double play at third base by Brett Baty and a subsequent strikeout.
Edwin Díaz closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning, securing his 14th save of the season.
Mets starter Kodai Senga gave up a solo home run to Mickey Moniak in the third inning. Moniak also had an RBI single in the seventh.
The loss halted the Rockies' three-game winning streak, which followed a sweep of the Marlins. Shortstop Ryan Ritter made his major league debut and lined a triple.
The Rockies employed a unique strategy with their starting pitching. Ryan Rolison opened the game, pitching the first inning, before Antonio Senzatela took over in the second. Senzatela pitched four scoreless innings, despite allowing three hits and four walks.
Ronny Mauricio doubled in the eighth inning, marking his first hit since being called up earlier in the week.
The Mets had a successful challenge at home plate in the fifth inning that resulted in a crucial out.
The Mets left 12 runners on base during the game.
The series continues on Saturday. The Mets are scheduled to start right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes (6-3, 3.07 ERA), while the Rockies will counter with left-hander Carson Palmquist (0-4, 8.50 ERA).
