The Philadelphia Phillies, leaders of the NL East, battled to a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, handing All-Star right-hander Jacob deGrom his third straight loss in a tightly contested game.
The pivotal moment came in the seventh inning. Brandon Marsh singled with one out, followed by a walk drawn by Harrison Bader. Both runners scored on Max Kepler’s clutch two-run double into the right-field corner, giving the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Bryson Stott then entered the game and delivered an RBI single, which padded the Phillies’ advantage.
Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo (11-5) delivered a strong performance, pitching six innings with four strikeouts and allowing only one run. The sole blemish was in the first inning when Wyatt Langford finished off the Rangers’ sequence of three consecutive singles to score Corey Seager.
Jhoan Duran, recently acquired at the trade deadline, sealed the win with a flawless ninth inning, notching his third save for the Phillies and 19th overall this season.
Jacob deGrom (10-5) showcased his usual dominance by striking out eight batters across 6 2/3 innings. Despite limiting the damage throughout most of the evening, Kepler's double and Stott’s single in the seventh proved too much to overcome. DeGrom’s recent slide marks his first three-game losing streak since early 2019.
Corey Seager accounted for both Rangers runs, scoring in the first and blasting his 17th home run of the season to lead off the eighth inning.
A critical play occurred in the fourth inning when Adolis García was thrown out attempting to steal third base. The next batter, Jake Burger, singled—a hit that likely would have extended the Rangers' lead had García remained on base.
The Phillies have an impressive 30-13 record when they score at least two runs in road games this season.
The Phillies will send Zack Wheeler (9-5, 2.64 ERA) to the mound in the series finale, aiming for his fifth consecutive season with at least 10 wins. The Rangers counter with left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.91 ERA), looking to even the series on their home field.
