SAN DIEGO — Manny Machado delivered a decisive three-run home run during a five-run seventh inning, powering the San Diego Padres to a 7-1 victory over the NL East-leading New York Mets on Tuesday night.
The game was notably impacted by Mets slugger Juan Soto’s early departure in the fourth inning after he fouled a ball off his left foot. The Mets later announced Soto suffered a bruised foot. He initially showed considerable pain but completed his at-bat, grounding out before exiting the game.
The Padres opened the scoring in the first inning when Jackson Merrill hit a run-scoring single off Mets starter Sean Manaea, who pitched for San Diego in 2022. Manaea allowed just one run on three hits over five innings, striking out four and issuing no walks.
The Mets tied the game in the fifth inning. Padres rookie Ryan Bergert loaded the bases with no outs, leading to Jeremiah Estrada entering in relief. Estrada struck out Francisco Lindor, but then allowed a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Starling Marte, bringing the score to 1-1 before retiring Pete Alonso.
San Diego regained the lead in the sixth inning. Jackson Merrill hit a chopper off Mets pitcher José Buttó that bounced over the head of first baseman Pete Alonso and rolled into the right-field corner for an RBI triple, scoring Luis Arraez who had singled.
The Padres broke the game open in the seventh. Elías Díaz hit a two-run double off José Buttó with one out. Later in the inning, Manny Machado greeted reliever Chris Devenski with his 20th homer of the season, a three-run shot that landed off the facade of the second deck in left field, extending San Diego’s lead to 7-1.
The Mets struggled offensively, managing just four hits in their second consecutive loss to the Padres, following a seven-game winning streak.
