SAN DIEGO -- — Kyle Higashioka delivered a stellar performance from the ninth spot in the lineup, going 3 for 3 with a home run and driving in five runs, leading the Texas Rangers to a 7-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.
Texas starter Patrick Corbin earned the win, allowing just two runs on six hits over six strong innings, helping the Rangers even the series. The Padres threatened in the bottom of the ninth, with Luis Arraez singling for the fourth time to load the bases with two outs against Robert Garcia. However, Shawn Armstrong entered the game and secured his third save by forcing Xander Bogaerts into a ground ball at third base for the final out.
The Rangers took an early lead in the first inning when Josh Smith hit the first pitch from Padres starter Stephen Kolek for his eighth home run of the season, making it 1-0. Kolek struggled, allowing six runs on nine hits through 5 1/3 innings and taking the loss.
San Diego responded in the second. Jose Iglesias drew a walk off Corbin, and Jake Cronenworth, who had the walk-off hit the previous night, followed with his eighth home run to put the Padres ahead 2-1.
Texas quickly regained the lead in the third. Jake Burger was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Kyle Higashioka followed with his second home run of the year, giving the Rangers a 3-2 advantage.
The Rangers extended their lead in the fourth inning. Wyatt Langford walked with two outs and scored on Jonah Heim's double. Burger and Higashioka then hit consecutive singles to push the lead to 5-2.
In the sixth, Langford singled to lead off, advanced to third on Burger's single, and scored on Higashioka's sacrifice fly, making it 6-2.
Luke Jackson replaced Corbin in the seventh and immediately loaded the bases with no outs. Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado each hit sacrifice flies to cut the Rangers' lead to 6-4.
Texas added an insurance run in the eighth inning with Higashioka's third hit of the night, a two-out run-scoring single that brought the score to its final 7-4.
Manny Machado went 1 for 4 in the game, leaving him just two hits away from reaching 2,000 for his career.
Higashioka's two-run home run in the third inning put the Rangers ahead for good.
Despite the Rangers' win, San Diego holds a strong record against Texas, having won 14 of their last 15 games against them dating back to 2020.
The series concludes on Sunday. The Padres have yet to announce their starting pitcher, who will face Rangers right-hander Jack Leiter, who holds a 4-5 record with a 4.29 ERA.
