Milwaukee Brewers Edge St. Louis Cardinals 3-2

Christian Yelich homered and Trevor Megill escaped a jam in the ninth inning, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday in the finale of a four-game series at American Family Field.

Drew Avans and Sal Frelick each drove in a run for Milwaukee, which won for the fourth time in six games. Yelich had three hits, and Caleb Durbin went 2 for 3 for the Brewers, who took three of four games in the series.

Iván Herrera hit his eighth homer for St. Louis with two out in the eighth inning, cutting the deficit to one run. Willson Contreras also drove in a run earlier in the game.

The runners advanced to second and third on a one-out wild pitch, but Megill fanned Victor Scott II and Masyn Winn to end the game and secure his 15th save in 17 opportunities.

Brewers Take the Lead

Yelich hit a solo drive in the fourth for his 14th homer of the season. Drew Avans followed with a sacrifice fly off Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas, giving Milwaukee a 2-1 lead. It was Avans' first career RBI.

The Brewers added another run in the seventh on Sal Frelick's groundout to extend their lead to 3-1.

Pitching Breakdown

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (4-4) took the loss, striking out seven in six innings.

For the Brewers, Quinn Priester (5-2) pitched six innings of one-run ball to earn his fourth consecutive win. He struck out three and walked none.

Alec Burleson followed Iván Herrera’s eighth-inning homer with a ground-rule double, putting the tying run in scoring position. However, Nick Mears relieved and struck out Willson Contreras to end the threat.

Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. He returned to the lineup in the leadoff spot after being removed from a previous game with left big toe discomfort.
