HOUSTON — Rookie Cam Smith delivered a tiebreaking RBI single off closer Jhoan Duran with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Houston Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.
The win marked Houston's fourth straight.
In the decisive ninth inning, Duran (4-2) issued a one-out walk to Christian Walker. Walker advanced to third on a two-out single by Jake Meyers. Smith then hit a grounder to center field, bringing Meyers home for his first career walk-off hit.
Astros closer Josh Hader (3-0) earned the win, striking out two batters in a scoreless top of the ninth inning.
Both starting pitchers delivered strong performances. Houston’s Hunter Brown pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while setting a career high with 12 strikeouts.
Minnesota’s Joe Ryan also went seven innings, yielding only two hits and two runs and striking out seven.
Yainer Diaz provided Houston's early offense with a two-run home run in the third inning. Brooks Lee tied the game for the Twins with his own home run in the fifth, extending his career-long hitting streak to 14 games.
For the Astros bullpen, Bryan Abreu struck out three batters in a scoreless eighth inning.
Brown hit Byron Buxton on the left elbow to start the sixth inning before walking Trevor Larnach. Despite the contact, Brown escaped the jam by retiring the next three batters, two via strikeout.
