The Houston Astros secured a nail-biting 6-5 victory over the Texas Rangers, thanks to a standout performance by Jeremy Peña, who went 3 for 3 and scored twice. Jose Altuve contributed with two RBIs as the Astros held off a late Rangers rally to remain a half-game behind Seattle for the top spot in the AL West. Houston also moved half a game ahead of Boston for the second American League wild card.
Houston built a commanding 6-0 lead early. Jesús Sánchez delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning, while Yainer Diaz and Altuve each added RBIs to knock out Texas starter Merrill Kelly after just three-plus innings. Kelly allowed nine hits and six runs in a tough outing for the Rangers.
The Rangers chipped away at the deficit starting in the fifth inning, when Cody Freeman hit a solo home run. The game tightened dramatically in the eighth, highlighted by Jonah Heim's pinch-hit homer off Enyel De Los Santos, an RBI double by Josh Jung, and Adolis García’s pinch-hit single that brought Texas within one run.
Astros reliever Bryan Abreu was called upon in a high-pressure situation during the eighth inning. He walked Alejandro Osuna and gave up a run-scoring single to García but managed to end the threat by retiring Cody Freeman on a fly ball. In the ninth, Abreu again worked under pressure, after allowing two singles, but ultimately struck out Kyle Higashioka to secure his seventh save of the season.
Houston starter AJ Blubaugh delivered three scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in his second big league start. Colton Gordon (5-4) posted three innings of one-run relief for the win. The Astros’ bullpen weathered the late storm and closed out the win, preserving the series' tie at 6-6 overall.
With their third straight loss, the Rangers are now 3 1/2 games behind Boston for the final AL playoff spot and have just 10 games remaining. Their pitching staff struggled early, but the offense nearly mounted an improbable comeback in the final innings.
Bryan Abreu’s clutch strikeout of Kyle Higashioka to seal the four-out save, ending Texas’ late-game rally and securing the win for Houston.
The Astros and Rangers are now tied 6-6 in their season series, underscoring the competitiveness between the AL West rivals.
In the series finale Wednesday night, Texas will send right-hander Jacob deGrom (12-7, 2.82 ERA) to the mound to face Houston’s Cristian Javier (1-3, 4.78 ERA).
Jeremy Peña’s perfect night at the plate and Jose Altuve’s clutch RBIs set up the Astros for a crucial 6-5 win over the Rangers. Despite a late Texas surge, Bryan Abreu’s pitching prowess shut the door, keeping Houston in the thick of the AL West and wild card races. With the season series knotted and playoff spots on the line, the final games between these two rivals promise even more excitement.
