The Houston Astros secured a crucial 6-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night, opening a pivotal three-game series at home. Zach Cole emerged as the hero for Houston, delivering a standout performance after replacing injured slugger Yordan Alvarez in the lineup.
Yordan Alvarez exited in the first inning after spraining his left ankle while scoring from first base on an error. Zach Cole took over in right field and immediately made an impact. He launched a two-run home run off Rangers starter Jack Leiter in the fifth inning, giving the Astros a 4-3 lead. Cole finished the night with three RBIs, providing the spark Houston needed.
Houston extended its advantage to 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to consecutive two-out doubles from Jesús Sánchez and Jeremy Peña, followed by another RBI single by Cole. The insurance runs helped hold off a late push from the Rangers.
Texas threatened in the seventh when Jonah Heim tried to score on Wyatt Langford’s single, but Jesús Sánchez threw out Heim at the plate to end the inning and preserve Houston’s lead.
Starter Jason Alexander allowed three runs (one earned) over 4 2/3 innings. The Astros bullpen was stellar, combining for 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Steven Okert (3-2) earned the win, with Jayden Murray, Bryan King, and Bryan Abreu contributing. Abreu closed out the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
Texas took a brief 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Josh Jung and an RBI single by Josh Smith. However, they couldn’t hold off the Astros comeback. Jack Leiter (9-9) allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits over 6 2/3 innings in the loss.
Zach Cole is off to a remarkable start in his major league career, going 6-for-13 with two home runs and seven RBIs in his first four games.
The series continues Tuesday night with Astros right-hander AJ Blubaugh (3-1, 2.45 ERA) making his second career start against Rangers righty Merrill Kelly (12-7, 3.21 ERA).
The Houston Astros edged out the Texas Rangers 6-3 in a key AL West matchup, moving within a half-game of first place and gaining a crucial edge in the wild card race. Zach Cole’s timely homer and impressive RBIs filled the void left by Yordan Alvarez’s injury, while strong defensive plays and effective relief pitching helped Houston seal the victory. With the win, the Astros remain firmly in playoff contention as this highly anticipated series continues.
