The New York Yankees powered past the Detroit Tigers with a 9-3 victory at Yankee Stadium, avoiding a three-game sweep. The game was highlighted by Aaron Judge’s impressive performance, as he hit two home runs to tie Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio for fourth place in Yankees franchise history.
Aaron Judge wasted no time getting the Yankees on the board, homering in the first inning off Tigers starter Tyler Holton. He followed up in the third inning with a 434-foot blast to the back of the Detroit bullpen, marking his 361st career home run and matching DiMaggio’s milestone.
This was Judge’s sixth multi-home run game of the season. After recently passing Yogi Berra for fifth on the franchise’s home run list, Judge is now tied with DiMaggio, further solidifying his place among Yankee greats. Judge finished the night with three hits and now leads the majors with a .322 batting average, three points ahead of Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson.
Giancarlo Stanton added to the offensive outburst with his 449th career home run, which followed Judge’s second solo shot. Stanton’s homer ties him with Hall of Famers Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Jeff Bagwell for 41st on the all-time list. Including the postseason, Judge and Stanton have homered in the same game 56 times, including five times this season.
Additional run support came from Ben Rice, who hit an RBI double, and José Caballero, Austin Slater, Cody Bellinger, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., each contributing run-scoring singles. The Yankees’ surge moved them a half-game ahead of Boston for the top American League wild card as they head into a crucial series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
New York rookie Cam Schlittler rebounded from his previous outing, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings, earning his third win. Ryan Yarbrough closed out the game, pitching three innings for his fourth major league save and first of the season.
Detroit’s Dillon Dingler provided offense for the Tigers, homering and adding an RBI single. However, the Tigers couldn’t complete their first sweep of the Yankees in New York since 2008.
In a pivotal second inning, Cam Schlittler allowed a tying single to Dillon Dingler but battled back to end the 26-pitch frame. Schlittler struck out Parker Meadows and retired Javier Báez on a groundout, keeping the game within reach for the Yankees.
The Yankees boast a remarkable 49-7 record when both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton homer in the same game.
The Tigers will begin a three-game series in Miami with ace Tarik Skubal (13-4, 2.10 ERA) facing Sandy Alcantara (8-12, 5.67 ERA). The Yankees head to Boston for a pivotal series as Luis Gil (3-1, 3.31 ERA) takes on Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (10-3, 3.38 ERA).
The Yankees avoided a sweep by defeating the Tigers 9-3, highlighted by Aaron Judge’s two home runs that tied Joe DiMaggio’s career mark for the franchise. With robust support from both the offense and the pitching staff, New York positioned itself as the top American League wild card as it enters a key series against the Boston Red Sox. The Tigers will look to rebound as they head to Miami, but their bid for a sweep in New York will have to wait for another year.
