Byron Buxton powered the Minnesota Twins to victory with two impressive home runs, including his second consecutive leadoff homer, as the Twins defeated the Texas Rangers 4-0 in Arlington. Starting pitcher Bailey Ober turned in a dominant performance, throwing six shutout innings and allowing just two hits while striking out five.
The Minnesota Twins outhit the Rangers 10-3. Buxton led the charge, while Trevor Larnach, Royce Lewis, Edouard Julien, and Christian Vázquez each collected two hits for the Twins. Buxton’s 10th leadoff home run of the season set the tone early, following his leadoff homer in the previous game. It marks the second time this season Buxton has recorded leadoff homers in back-to-back games, duplicating the feat from June 18-19 against Cincinnati.
Bailey Ober (6-9) matched his season low in hits allowed and notched his first scoreless outing of the year. The right-hander’s last shutout start came on September 7, 2024, against Kansas City. Twins relievers Kody Funderburk and Cole Sands combined to close out the game, with Funderburk throwing a hitless seventh (two strikeouts) and Sands striking out one in the ninth.
The Twins preserved a one-run lead in the fifth inning with a heads-up strikeout double play. Kyle Higashioka struck out swinging, and Alejandro Osuna was caught stealing second base, ending a Rangers scoring threat.
In the eighth inning, after singles by Edouard Julien and Christian Vázquez, Buxton hit the first pitch from Chris Martin 437 feet to center field for his second home run of the day. The blast would have cleared the fences in all 30 Major League ballparks, breaking open the game for Minnesota.
Tyler Mahle (6-4) started for the Rangers, allowing five hits and one run over five innings while striking out four.
The Rangers travel to face the Cleveland Guardians, who sit one game ahead of Detroit for first place in the AL Central. Right-hander Jack Leiter (9-10, 3.92 ERA) gets the start for Texas against Cleveland’s Slade Cecconi (7-6, 4.15 ERA).
The Twins head to Philadelphia to take on the NL East champion Phillies. Minnesota will send right-hander Joe Ryan (13-9, 3.47 ERA) to the mound against Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola (4-10, 6.46 ERA).
The Minnesota Twins blanked the Texas Rangers 4-0, led by Byron Buxton’s two home runs and an outstanding pitching performance from Bailey Ober. With significant offensive contributions and tight defense, the Twins secured an important road win. The team looks to carry this momentum into their upcoming series in Philadelphia, while the Rangers prepare to battle for playoff positioning in Cleveland.
