The Chicago White Sox put an end to their five-game skid in dramatic fashion, defeating the Washington Nationals 10-9 on Friday night at Nationals Park. Colson Montgomery delivered the pivotal blow with a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, while Lenyn Sosa had a standout night, going 3-for-3 at the plate, including a home run and three runs batted in.
The matchup saw an abundance of home runs, with Washington’s Luis García Jr. launching a career-high three among the Nationals' six total for the game. Teammates Josh Bell, CJ Abrams, and Daylen Lile also homered, marking the team's highest single-game home run total since July 19, 2021.
Despite the Nationals' power display, the White Sox were able to capitalize early and often. Chase Meidroth scored the game’s first run after reaching on a fielding error and scoring on Miguel Vargas’ single. The White Sox added three more in the first inning courtesy of a two-run double by Brooks Baldwin and an RBI double from Sosa, who would later add a solo homer in the fourth.
Kyle Teel contributed to the scoring with a run-producing single, giving Chicago a 6-1 lead at one point.
Fraser Ellard picked up the win for Chicago, while Grant Taylor earned his sixth save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Nationals reliever Jose A. Ferrer took the loss and suffered his fourth blown save of the season after surrendering two runs—one earned—in the final frame.
Colson Montgomery's ninth-inning heroics came after Kyle Teel reached base on a fielding error. Two pitches later, Montgomery sent a 97-mph sinker over the right-center field wall, tilting the game in the White Sox’s favor for good.
One notable streak ended as Jordan Leasure’s run of 14 consecutive scoreless innings (third-longest active in MLB) was snapped during the action.
Hitting with runners in scoring position had plagued the White Sox over their losing streak, as they entered the night batting just .103 (6-for-58) in their last 12 games. On Friday night, Chicago reversed its fortunes by going 5-for-11 in such situations, a major factor in their offensive resurgence.
James Wood of the Nationals added another strikeout to his season total, bringing him up to a league-worst 216. The single-season record is held by Mark Reynolds at 223 strikeouts, set in 2009.
The White Sox and Nationals continue their three-game series on Saturday. Sean Burke (4-11, 4.29 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for Chicago, facing off against Washington’s Jake Irvin (9-13, 5.69 ERA).
The Chicago White Sox broke their losing streak with a thrilling 10-9 comeback win over the Washington Nationals, thanks to Colson Montgomery’s late home run and Lenyn Sosa’s outstanding night at the plate. Despite a powerful home run barrage from Washington, the White Sox’s improved performance with runners in scoring position proved decisive. The series continues, with both teams looking to build on the explosive opener.
