The Chicago Cubs snapped a three-game losing streak with an 11-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night at Coors Field. The win allowed the Cubs to keep pace in the NL Central division race, staying 6 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.
Dansby Swanson delivered an unforgettable performance, hitting two home runs and driving in a season-high six runs. Swanson’s multi-homer game was the 10th of his career and his first since August 1, 2023. His power display put the Cubs in control early, launching his first homer in the second inning to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. Later, Swanson cleared the bases with a triple off the right-center wall in a pivotal six-run fifth inning.
Ian Happ also powered Chicago’s offense, homering and hitting two doubles. Michael Busch joined the home run barrage, adding his 26th of the season in the seventh. The Cubs’ offense came alive against Rockies starter German Marquez, who was making his first start since returning from the injured list. Marquez allowed eight runs over just 3 2/3 innings, struggling to contain Chicago’s bats.
Cubs rookie right-hander Cade Horton (9-4) contributed another solid outing, giving up two runs on six hits in five innings with four strikeouts. Horton’s performance kept the Rockies’ lineup in check during the game’s decisive early innings.
Yanquiel Fernandez homered for Colorado, pulling the Rockies within 3-2 before Chicago opened the floodgates in the fifth. The Rockies battled back late, scoring twice in the seventh and getting a two-run homer from Kyle Farmer in the eighth. However, their rally was not enough to overcome the Cubs’ early offensive surge.
In the eighth inning, after Fernandez doubled, Michael Busch made a critical over-the-shoulder catch on a blooper by Orlando Arcia behind first base, preventing a potential run and preserving Chicago’s lead.
This was Swanson’s first six-RBI game since August 19, 2021, when he played for Atlanta.
The Cubs will send right-hander Javier Assad (0-1, 3.86 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night to face Rockies rookie McCade Brown (0-1, 9.82 ERA), making his debut at Coors Field.
The Chicago Cubs secured a crucial victory over the Colorado Rockies with powerful performances from Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ, and Michael Busch. Swanson’s two home runs and six RBIs led the way as the Cubs remained in pursuit of the NL Central lead. Strong rookie pitching from Cade Horton helped the Cubs stave off a late Rockies rally, solidifying an important road win as the season moves toward its final stretch.
