The Milwaukee Brewers secured an impressive 7-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night at Wrigley Field, propelled by a stellar pitching performance and timely offense.
Brewers ace Freddy Peralta allowed just one hit across six innings, notching his major league-leading 15th win of the season. Peralta struck out six batters, silencing the Cubs' lineup and pushing Milwaukee to an MLB-best record of 79-45.
This win marks Milwaukee’s 15th victory in their last 16 games, widening their NL Central division lead to nine games over Chicago. The Brewers have now won 23 of 28 games since the All-Star break.
Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin powered Milwaukee’s offense with two hits apiece, each launching a solo home run and driving in two runs. The productive duo helped put early pressure on Chicago’s starter, Cade Horton, who exited in the third inning with a blister on his pitching hand.
Relievers Abner Uribe, Jared Koenig, and Grant Anderson combined to hold the Cubs to just one hit over the final three innings, securing the team shutout.
After Horton’s early exit, Drew Pomeranz managed to minimize damage in the third, but defensive errors and bullpen struggles, particularly in the sixth and eighth innings, allowed the Brewers to break the game open. Luke Little’s throwing error permitted a run in the sixth, while Gavin Hollowell issued four walks and surrendered four earned runs in the eighth.
The Cubs’ best opportunity came in the fourth inning, trailing 1-0. Freddy Peralta issued three consecutive walks to load the bases with one out. He responded under pressure by striking out rookie Owen Caissie and retiring Nico Hoerner, preserving the Brewers' lead.
Chicago was limited to just two hits, losing for the sixth time in their last ten games.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the nightcap was postponed and will be made up Tuesday afternoon as part of a day-night doubleheader. For the Cubs, Matthew Boyd (11-6, 2.46 ERA) is set to pitch the opener, with Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.44 ERA) expected to return from the injured list for Game 2. Milwaukee will counter with Chad Patrick (3-7, 3.52 ERA) in Game 1 and undefeated Brandon Woodruff (4-0, 2.06 ERA) in the second matchup.
The Milwaukee Brewers continued their dominance with a commanding 7-0 shutout against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Freddy Peralta’s exceptional pitching and offensive firepower from Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin led the way, strengthening Milwaukee’s hold on the NL Central. Chicago struggled with both pitching and timely hitting, managing only two hits and failing to capitalize on rare scoring opportunities. The series resumes with a day-night doubleheader as both teams look to make statements in the division race.
