The New York Yankees secured a dramatic 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in extra innings, thanks to a clutch pinch-hit, two-run home run by Giancarlo Stanton in the top of the 10th inning. Stanton’s blast broke the tie and lifted the Yankees to a much-needed win on the road at Tropicana Field.
After the Rays tied the game in the ninth, Giancarlo Stanton delivered as a pinch hitter in the 10th inning, sending a two-run homer over the fence to give the Yankees the lead. Austin Wells followed the momentum, launching his second home run of the night soon after, both coming off Rays closer Pete Fairbanks, who was charged with the loss (4-4).
Rays catcher Hunter Feduccia came through with a two-out, two-run double off Yankees closer David Bednar in the ninth inning, tying the game and sending it into extra frames. Feduccia, who had not driven in a run all season, found the gap in center field to keep Tampa Bay’s hopes alive. However, Bednar (4-5) ultimately earned the win despite the blown save, overtaking credit from young starter Cam Schlittler.
Making his seventh major league start, Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler impressed by holding the Rays to just one hit over a career-high 6 and 2/3 innings. Schlittler’s bid for a perfect game was spoiled by Chandler Simpson’s leadoff single in the seventh, but he managed to escape a jam with help from reliever Luke Weaver. Schlittler struck out eight batters, all swinging.
Trent Grisham set the tone for the Yankees by leading off the game with a solo home run and added his second long ball in the eighth inning. Austin Wells also starred at the plate, mashing two home runs in the game to power the Yankees’ offense.
Rays rookie Bob Seymour hit his first major league home run in the eighth inning to cut into the Yankees’ lead and later added an RBI single in the 10th. Devin Williams took the mound for New York in the final inning, striking out the Rays’ top three hitters with runners at second and third to notch his 18th save of the season.
Hunter Feduccia’s two-out double in the bottom of the ninth tied the game, keeping the Rays alive and forcing extra innings in an intense back-and-forth battle.
The Yankees improved to 1-6 in extra-inning road games this season, finally breaking through with a hard-fought win.
The Yankees return home to host the Boston Red Sox, with Luis Gil (1-1, 5.14 ERA) scheduled to start the series opener. The Rays will remain at home to open a series against the St. Louis Cardinals, with Joe Boyle (1-2, 4.68 ERA) taking the mound for Tampa Bay.
The New York Yankees emerged victorious in a thrilling extra-innings matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, highlighted by Giancarlo Stanton’s game-winning, two-run homer in the 10th and strong performances from rookie Cam Schlittler, Trent Grisham, and Austin Wells. Tampa Bay rallied late but could not overcome New York’s late-inning power surge, as the Yankees secured their first extra-inning road win of the season. This game showcased resilience, strong pitching, and timely hitting as both teams look ahead to critical upcoming series.
