The Detroit Tigers claimed a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on September 3, 2025, thanks to a standout performance by Kerry Carpenter. Carpenter blasted a three-run home run and crossed the plate twice, propelling the Tigers to break a recent losing streak and close out their series with a win.
AL Central-leading Detroit had dropped seven of their last nine games before rallying with a key two-run single from Riley Greene in the fifth inning, giving Detroit a 3-1 advantage. This crucial hit helped swing momentum back to the Tigers after losing the first two games of the series.
Pete Alonso led the Mets with three hits, including an RBI double in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1. His contribution wasn’t enough, though, as New York concluded their grueling stretch of 16 games in 16 days with a 9-7 record.
Carpenter continued his stellar game, walking and scoring in the fifth before smacking a three-run homer off Mets reliever Ryan Helsley in the seventh, extending Detroit's lead to 6-2.
Casey Mize earned the win for Detroit, improving to 13-5 after allowing only one run and five hits over five innings. On the other side, Clay Holmes started for the Mets but ran into trouble in the fifth before Gregory Soto relieved him and allowed Greene's two-run hit. Mark Vientos chipped in an RBI single for the Mets in the sixth, but the team failed to capitalize further after a leaping catch by Tigers center fielder Javier Báez robbed Brandon Nimmo of extra bases.
With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Tigers reliever Tommy Kahnle preserved Detroit’s 3-2 lead by coaxing Starling Marte into an inning-ending double play, stopping the Mets’ rally cold.
Mets star Juan Soto reached base twice—via single and walk—marking the 30th time in 31 games he’s reached safely, underscoring his value at the top of the order.
Both teams have a day off on Thursday. The Mets will start prized prospect Jonah Tong (1-0, 1.80 ERA) against All-Star lefty Andrew Abbott (8-5, 2.65 ERA) in Cincinnati on Friday. Detroit returns home to host the Chicago White Sox.
The Detroit Tigers bounced back with a crucial 6-2 win over the New York Mets, highlighted by Kerry Carpenter’s three-run homer and solid pitching from Casey Mize. Despite a strong night from Pete Alonso, the Mets couldn't overcome key defensive plays by Detroit and timely hitting from Riley Greene. Both teams now look ahead to their next matchups after a much-needed rest day.
