The New York Mets staged an impressive comeback, overcoming an early three-run deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 13-3 in a pivotal NL East showdown at Citi Field.
Luis Torrens delivered a standout performance, blasting a three-run homer and matching his career high with five RBI. Torrens previously reached the five-RBI mark on August 14, 2021, while playing for Seattle. On this night, he broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI double in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 5-3 advantage before launching his three-run shot in the seventh. Torrens added an RBI single in the eighth, capping off his dominant game and providing New York with their final run.
Mark Vientos was instrumental for the Mets, snapping the game’s 3-all tie with an RBI double down the right-field line off Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez. In the fourth inning, Vientos sparked another rally with an RBI double down the left-field line, helping New York seize control of the game. Vientos has been on a hot streak, batting .387 over his last eight games.
Jeff McNeil drove in three runs with a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto each added RBI singles while Tyrone Taylor notched three hits, including a run-scoring single, further fueling the Mets’ offensive explosion. New York finished the game an impressive 11-for-19 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies struck first as Trea Turner led off with a triple and scored on Kyle Schwarber's groundout in the opening frame. Alec Bohm contributed a two-run single in the third inning, giving Philadelphia a 3-0 lead. However, the Phillies were held in check for the remainder of the game as the Mets’ pitching staff shut the door.
An unusual moment occurred in the fifth inning when Alec Bohm’s complaint about a parabolic microphone in center field after grounding into a double play led to a 10-minute delay. Once play resumed, Jose Castillo took the mound and retired Brandon Marsh to keep the game tied.
For the Mets, Kodai Senga allowed three runs and six hits over four-plus innings. Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez endured his shortest outing since May 24, allowing season highs of six runs and eight hits in just 5 1/3 innings.
Mark Vientos is hitting an impressive .387 (12-for-31) over his last eight games, providing much-needed offense for New York during their playoff push.
The series continues on Tuesday, with Phillies left-hander Jesús Luzardo (12-5, 4.10 ERA) set to face Mets left-hander Sean Manaea (1-2, 5.15 ERA).
The New York Mets delivered a decisive 13-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, fueled by a career night from Luis Torrens and timely contributions throughout the lineup. The win, their sixth in nine games, draws the Mets within six games of the NL East-leading Phillies as the playoff race intensifies.
