ST. LOUIS -- Manny Machado delivered a dominant performance, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBI, leading the San Diego Padres to a decisive 9-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. The win allowed the Padres to split their four-game series.
The Padres' offense started strong, with Fernando Tatis Jr. leading off with a walk against Michael McGreevy (2-2) and advancing to third on a single by Luis Arraez. Machado then doubled, driving in Tatis, and Arraez scored on a throwing error by center fielder Victor Scott II, giving San Diego a quick 2-0 lead just three batters into the contest.
Machado continued his stellar day, adding a two-run double to highlight a four-run fourth inning that extended San Diego's lead to 7-0.
Tatis contributed with two of San Diego's impressive 16 hits and scored three runs. Luis Arraez also had a productive outing, going 3 for 5 with an RBI and crossing the plate twice.
Xander Bogaerts added to the Padres' scoring with his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot off Andre Granillo in the seventh inning. Jackson Merrill capped the scoring in the eighth with a run-scoring infield hit off John King.
On the mound for San Diego, rookie Stephen Kolek (4-5) delivered a solid performance, allowing only four hits and two runs over six innings. The only runs against him came on Alec Burleson's 13th home run. This marked Kolek's first win since May 27, when he defeated the Marlins 8-6.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy (2-2) struggled, surrendering seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. This was McGreevy's fifth start of the season, having been called up from Triple-A Memphis five times.
Following the All-Star break, San Diego holds a 5-5 record, while St. Louis has gone 3-7.
Manny Machado's early RBI double, which put the Padres up 2-0 in the first inning, proved to be the pivotal moment, setting the tone for San Diego's offensive outburst.
Despite the offensive output, San Diego's 89 home runs rank second to last in the National League, ahead of only Pittsburgh, who has 69.
San Diego will continue their road trip on Monday, with RHP Dylan Cease (3-10, 4.59 ERA) scheduled to start against the visiting New York Mets, who will send RHP Frankie Montas (3-1, 4.52) to the mound.
St. Louis will also play on Monday, hosting Miami with RHP Andre Pallante (5-7, 4.91) slated to start.
