ARLINGTON, Texas – The Detroit Tigers snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak, defeating the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Sunday, July 20, 2025. Matt Vierling delivered the tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, securing a crucial road victory for Detroit.
Vierling’s clutch two-out base hit up the middle against Rangers reliever Chris Martin (1-6) scored Gleyber Torres, breaking a 1-1 deadlock. This came after the Rangers had finally managed to get on the scoreboard against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the seventh inning.
Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and a starter in last Tuesday’s All-Star Game, was dominant for most of the game, holding the Rangers to a two-hit shutout through six innings. He exited in the seventh with runners at the corners and two outs. Adolis García then scored the Rangers' lone run on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton (5-3).
Skubal’s stellar outing included 11 strikeouts and no walks over 105 pitches, marking his seventh double-digit strikeout game of the season.
Will Vest entered in the eighth inning and recorded four consecutive outs to earn his 16th save of the season for the Tigers.
Detroit’s first run came in the second inning when Zach McKinstry singled home Wenceel Pérez.
For the Rangers, left-hander Jacob Latz, pitching in place of the injured Nathan Eovaldi (back tightness), allowed six hits and two walks over five innings. This was Latz's third start of the season and fourth in his 72 big league appearances.
Corey Seager, the only left-handed batter in the Rangers' starting lineup against the left-handed Skubal, collected the first two hits off the Tigers' ace. Seager extended his impressive on-base streak to 21 games, currently the longest active run in the American League.
Matt Vierling's two-out single on a full-count fastball in the eighth inning gave the Detroit Tigers a decisive 2-1 lead.
The Detroit Tigers recorded nine hits in the game, a significant improvement after being limited to a combined seven hits in the first two games of the series.
Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty (5-9, 4.65 ERA) will look for his first win since June 8 when Detroit travels to Pittsburgh on Monday to face NL All-Star Game starter Paul Skenes (4-8, 2.01).
Rangers rookie right-hander Jack Leiter (5-6, 4.37) is scheduled to pitch at home on Monday against Athletics left-hander Jacob Lopez (3-5, 4.20).
