The Texas Rangers claimed a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Globe Life Field, powered by a pivotal four-run fifth inning and stellar defense from Michael Helman.
Michael Helman delivered another standout performance for Texas. Moments after making a leaping backhand catch over the left-center fence to deny the Brewers a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, Helman smashed a two-run home run during the Rangers’ subsequent four-run rally. Helman's all-around effort built on his previous game heroics, following a grand slam and five-RBI outing as he continues to impress since joining from Pittsburgh.
Milwaukee took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Brice Turang was robbed of a home run by Helman, but the Brewers rallied with an RBI infield single by Christian Yelich and a two-run single from William Contreras. However, Texas responded in the bottom half: Wyatt Langford’s RBI triple, following two earlier strikeouts, ignited the comeback, and Kyle Higashioka singled home the go-ahead run off Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby (3-2).
Hoby Milner (3-4) delivered a shutout inning in relief for Texas, bouncing back from recent struggles. Shawn Armstrong recorded his eighth save in 11 chances, despite giving up a pinch-hit home run to Jake Bauers in the ninth. The Brewers threatened but could not complete the comeback.
The win marks Texas’ 13th victory in their last 17 games, shrinking their gap behind the Houston Astros in the AL West standings from 7.5 games to just 2.5 games.
Both starting pitchers, Texas’ Jack Leiter and Milwaukee’s Chad Patrick, were rookies called up recently and neither made it through five innings. The game quickly became a contest of the bullpens as both received early hooks.
Wyatt Langford’s go-ahead triple in the fifth, snapping a 6-for-38 slump, swung the momentum in Texas’ favor.
The Brewers still have yet to be swept in a three-game series since their season-opening set against the New York Yankees.
The series finale on Wednesday will feature a pitching matchup between Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (16-5, 2.50 ERA), tied for the MLB lead in wins, and Rangers’ righty Merrill Kelly (11-7, 3.16 ERA).
The Texas Rangers edged out the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4, fueled by a clutch home run and game-changing catch from Michael Helman during a decisive fifth-inning rally. With bullpen resilience and renewed offense, Texas continues to close the gap in the AL West. The Brewers will look to rebound in the series finale, as both teams remain focused on the postseason race.
