The Chicago White Sox snapped their six-game losing streak with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Miguel Vargas delivered the big blow early with a two-run homer, setting the tone for the night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
White Sox starter Davis Martin (7-10) turned in a quality start, allowing three runs and six hits over six innings. He issued just one walk and struck out four. Crucially, Martin kept the Padres at bay during key moments and departed with the lead after the White Sox broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning by scoring twice.
Rookie reliever Grant Taylor recorded the final three outs in the ninth inning, collecting his fifth save on the season. Taylor was the last of three relievers used by the White Sox as they protected their narrow advantage down the stretch.
Former White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease (8-12) started for San Diego in his first appearance against his former club. Cease gave up four runs and four hits over six innings, walking three and collecting six strikeouts. His night included a couple of untimely hit batters that led to trouble in the critical fourth inning.
Miguel Vargas gave Chicago an early lead in the first inning with his 15th home run of the year, a two-run blast. The Padres responded with RBI singles by Luis Arraez in the third and Ryan O’Hearn in the fourth to tie the contest. In the bottom of the fourth, the White Sox drew ahead for good behind consecutive run-scoring singles from Curtis Mead and Will Robertson.
San Diego, closing in on a second consecutive postseason berth, has now lost two straight games. The loss gives the Padres a bit less breathing room as they look to secure their playoff spot.
In the decisive fourth inning, Mike Tauchman and Edgar Quero both reached base after being hit by Cease. Curtis Mead and Will Robertson brought both runners home with crucial singles, providing the White Sox with all the runs they would need for the rest of the game.
The White Sox, currently holding the worst record in the American League, need to win five of their remaining eight games in order to avoid a club-record third straight 100-loss season.
On Saturday night, Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (4-5, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled to face White Sox right-hander Yoendrys Gomez (3-2, 4.02 ERA) as the series continues in Chicago.
The Chicago White Sox put together a resilient performance to defeat the San Diego Padres, ending a lengthy slump behind strong pitching from Davis Martin and timely contributions from Miguel Vargas, Curtis Mead, and Will Robertson. Despite a determined Padres team fighting for postseason positioning, Chicago’s fourth inning rally and effective bullpen closed the deal. The White Sox remain focused on finishing strong and avoiding another 100-loss campaign, while the Padres look to regain momentum in their push for the playoffs.
