The Milwaukee Brewers opened their six-game road trip with a 5-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, solidifying their position at the top of the NL Central. Jake Bauers led the Brewers’ offense with a crucial two-run single, while Quinn Priester delivered a strong pitching performance for Pittsburgh, despite the loss.
Quinn Priester set a franchise record by earning his 11th consecutive winning decision, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits, with six strikeouts and one walk. Priester surpassed the previous record held by Chris Bosio and Cal Eldred, who each had 10 straight winning decisions in 1992. Although Priester (12-2) broke the club record, his effort was not enough to stop the Brewers.
Bauers’ two-run single off Pirates reliever Carmen Mlodzinski in the sixth inning put the Brewers ahead for good. Brice Turang added an RBI single in the eighth, and Andrew Vaughn contributed an insurance run in the ninth. Milwaukee’s bullpen shut the door, with Abner Uribe retiring all three batters in the ninth for his fifth save.
Jake Bauers, Brice Turang, and William Contreras each collected two hits for the Brewers. For the Pirates, Spencer Horwitz and Oneil Cruz both had multi-hit games as well.
Pirates starter Johan Oviedo impressed in his fifth outing since returning from Tommy John surgery, holding Milwaukee to just one hit and one unearned run over five innings.
The pivotal point of the evening came in the sixth inning when Jake Bauers lined a two-run single to right, shifting the game's momentum and giving the Brewers a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
The Brewers improved to 31-11 in their last 42 road games, while snapping the Pirates’ seven-game home winning streak. This win also helped the Brewers maintain their 5 1/2-game lead in the NL Central over the Chicago Cubs.
The Pirates, despite strong pitching and recent momentum, lost for just the fifth time in their last 17 outings. The Brewers bounced back after losing three of their previous four games, starting their road trip on a high note.
On Saturday, the Brewers will send Brandon Woodruff (5-2, 3.69 ERA) to the mound against Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller (6-13, 4.21 ERA).
The Milwaukee Brewers delivered a well-rounded team performance to top the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2, highlighted by Jake Bauers’ clutch hitting and shutdown relief work. Quinn Priester’s club-record streak was a bright spot for Pittsburgh, but Milwaukee’s timely offense kept them ahead. The Brewers remain firm atop the NL Central standings as the road trip continues.
