The Milwaukee Brewers secured a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night, fueled by two-run home runs from Jake Bauers and Jackson Chourio. Starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff delivered six scoreless innings for the NL Central leaders, extending their division lead and putting them in a strong position for the remainder of the season.
The game started as a pitching duel until Jake Bauers broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. With two outs, Bauers launched his sixth home run of the season, bringing William Contreras home after his single. Bauers finished with two hits on the night.
Jackson Chourio added insurance for the Brewers in the eighth inning, hitting his 19th homer of the year off Evan Sisk and doubling Milwaukee's lead.
Brandon Woodruff was dominant on the mound, allowing just two hits, striking out eight, and not issuing a single walk over his six innings of work. Aaron Ashby closed out the game, earning his third save after securing the final four outs.
With this win, the Brewers boosted their NL Central lead to 6.5 games over the Chicago Cubs, who lost to the Washington Nationals earlier in the evening. There are 19 games remaining in the regular season for Milwaukee.
Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and five hits. He took his fourth loss in his last five starts. Jared Triolo and Bryan Reynolds each had two of the Pirates’ five hits. The Pirates scored their lone run in the ninth inning on an RBI groundout by Oneil Cruz.
Pirates batters struggled to deliver in key situations, and the team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since mid-August.
Sal Frelick went 2 for 4 for Milwaukee, raising his season average to .299. William Contreras achieved a significant milestone by becoming just the fifth catcher in Brewers’ history to catch 1,000 innings in back-to-back seasons.
The turning point came in the seventh inning. The Pirates, trailing 2-0, put runners on first and second but were unable to capitalize as Rob Zastryzny induced Nick Yorke to foul out and end the threat.
William Contreras joins Darrell Porter, B.J. Surhoff, Jason Kendall, and Jonathan Lucroy as the only Brewers catchers with 1,000 innings caught in consecutive seasons.
Rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski (4-2, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Brewers on Sunday. The Pirates have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
The Milwaukee Brewers used strong pitching and timely home runs from Jake Bauers and Jackson Chourio to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1. With Brandon Woodruff delivering six shutout innings and Aaron Ashby sealing the victory, the Brewers extended their lead in the NL Central as the regular season winds down. The Pirates struggled offensively and will look to bounce back in the upcoming matchup.
