The Milwaukee Brewers continued their remarkable run with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the New York Mets, capping off a dramatic MLB showdown at American Family Field. Center fielder Blake Perkins made the decisive play, throwing out Starling Marte at the plate to seal the Brewers’ seventh consecutive win and preserve their position atop the Major League standings with a 71-44 record.
With the Mets mounting a ninth-inning rally, Starling Marte doubled with two outs against Trevor Megill. Jeff McNeil then singled to center, giving Marte a chance to tie the game. However, Perkins charged the ball and fired a perfect one-hop throw to catcher William Contreras, who tagged Marte just before his hand touched home. The Mets challenged the close call, but replays confirmed Contreras’ tag ended the game in dramatic fashion.
The Mets grabbed an early lead on solo home runs from Juan Soto in the first inning and Starling Marte in the second. The Brewers responded in the fifth, when Brice Turang smashed a two-run homer off Kodai Senga to tie the score. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Isaac Collins was hit by a pitch from Brooks Raley, forcing in the go-ahead run for Milwaukee. All three Brewers runs came in the pivotal fifth inning.
Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff improved to 4-0, delivering a strong performance with seven innings of work, allowing two solo home runs but just three other hits. He struck out eight and walked two. Woodruff has now given up seven homers but only nine runs over his first six starts of the season. Trevor Megill closed out the contest for his 27th save in 30 opportunities.
Kodai Senga took the loss for the Mets, battling through adversity in the fifth inning after a costly fielding error set up the Brewers' rally. Only one of the three runs allowed by Senga was earned.
The Brewers’ comeback rally in the fifth inning began with a high chopper by Blake Perkins that Senga mishandled, leading to a critical error. The momentum shifted immediately, allowing Milwaukee to erase the 2-0 deficit and take control of the game.
The series continues as right-hander Tobias Myers (1-1, 4.30 ERA) takes the mound for Milwaukee on Saturday. The Mets have yet to announce their starting pitcher for the next matchup in this three-game set.
The Milwaukee Brewers extended their win streak to seven games by edging out the New York Mets 3-2 in an intense contest highlighted by timely hitting, an outstanding defensive play by Blake Perkins, and strong pitching by Brandon Woodruff. The Brewers’ ability to capitalize on a fifth-inning Mets error and execute in crucial moments secured their status as the team to beat in the majors. Meanwhile, the Mets’ struggles continued with their fifth straight loss, making their search for answers all the more urgent as the series continues.
