The Milwaukee Brewers staged an impressive comeback on their home turf, rallying from a five-run deficit to overcome the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 in 10 innings. With the win, the Brewers secured their position as playoff-bound NL Central leaders and extended the Cardinals' losing streak to five games.
Milwaukee entered the game already assured of at least a National League Wild Card berth, following the New York Mets’ earlier defeat. Despite that security, the Brewers kept their foot on the pedal, determined to maintain their lead in the NL Central and sharpen their edge heading into the postseason.
The Cardinals built what looked like an insurmountable 6-1 lead by the sixth inning. However, Milwaukee answered with a clutch performance in the late innings. Over the eighth and ninth, the Brewers tallied five runs, tying the game at 7-all thanks to RBI infield singles from Jackson Chourio and William Contreras—who finished the night driving in three runs overall.
Reliever Abner Uribe (3-2) navigated a tough 10th inning, loading the bases with no outs but yielding just one run after Ivan Herrera’s double-play grounder. In the bottom of the frame, Caleb Durbin delivered a clutch game-tying double off Kyle Leahy (4-2), and then Andruw Monasterio sealed the walk-off win with a single up the middle to score Durbin, giving Brewers fans a thrilling finish.
Milwaukee improved their MLB-best record to 91-58, now leading the NL Central by six and a half games over the Chicago Cubs, who fell 5-4 to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Brewers maintain a two-game advantage over the Philadelphia Phillies, leaders of the NL East.
Brewers rookie starter Jacob Misiorowski allowed four runs over five innings, surrendering seven hits including solo home runs to Iván Herrera and Brendan Donovan. Cardinals’ ace Sonny Gray struck out eight across five innings, yielding just two runs.
St. Louis closer Riley O’Brien entered in the ninth in pursuit of his fourth save of the season but was replaced after surrendering baserunners to the first four batters he faced—a move that changed the game’s momentum.
Milwaukee capitalized on opportunities, batting 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
The series wraps up Sunday with Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas (7-10, 4.84 ERA) set to take on left-hander Jose Quintana (11-6, 3.88 ERA) in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Brewers showcased resilience, overturning a late five-run deficit to edge out the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 in extra innings. Armed with standout performances from William Contreras, Caleb Durbin, and Andruw Monasterio, the playoff-bound Brewers solidified their position atop the NL Central and extended their winning ways. Both teams continue their competitive battle as the regular season nears its conclusion.
