Joe Ryan delivered a standout performance, allowing just one run and four hits over 6 2/3 innings to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 4-1 win over the New York Yankees. This victory marks the end of a nine-game losing streak for the Twins against the Yankees.
Ryan (12-5) was locked in from the start, striking out seven and issuing only two walks. His outing was highlighted by a 97.7 mph fastball to strike out Aaron Judge in the first inning. The only blemish on his night was a home run surrendered to Cody Bellinger. Ryan bounced back by striking out the next four batters and allowing just two more baserunners before leaving the game. The game was delayed at the outset for nearly two hours due to rain, but Ryan didn’t let that distraction affect his command on the mound.
Minnesota’s offense came alive in the sixth inning. Byron Buxton and rookie Luke Keaschall set the table with infield hits. Kody Clemens broke out of an 0-for-18 slump by roping a two-run double and then advanced to third base on a bobble in the outfield. Royce Lewis followed up with an RBI double, giving the Twins a decisive three-run frame against Yerry De Los Santos and Mark Leiter Jr. Rookie Luke Keaschall added an RBI groundout earlier in the game, helping Minnesota take control.
Kody Funderburk came out of the bullpen to strike out Austin Wells and close out the seventh inning. Justin Topa followed with a dominant six-out save, securing the five-hit win for the Twins. It was a strong showing from Minnesota’s relievers to preserve Ryan’s quality start.
New York rookie Cam Schlitter gave the Yankees a solid start, allowing just one run and three hits over 5 1/3 innings. He retired nine straight Twins to open the game until Trevor Larnach drew a walk in the fourth, followed by Byron Buxton’s double. Despite Schlitter's efforts, the Yankees' bats were mostly silent after Bellinger's solo home run.
The pivotal sixth inning rally was fueled by infield singles from Buxton and Keaschall, with Clemens’ two-strike double breaking the game open
Kody Clemens snapped an 0-for-18 hitless streak with his crucial two-run double.
The Twins head home to host Detroit, with Bailey Ober (4-7, 5.16 ERA) set to face Tarik Skubal (11-3, 2.35 ERA) on Thursday night. The Yankees travel to St. Louis, where Luis Gil (0-1, 7.27 ERA) matches up with Andre Pallante (6-9, 4.95 ERA) in a Friday night series opener.
The Minnesota Twins ended a challenging nine-game losing streak against the New York Yankees with a 4-1 win, led by Joe Ryan's strong start, timely hitting from Kody Clemens and Royce Lewis, and solid relief pitching. The victory provides momentum for the Twins as they return home, while the Yankees look to bounce back on the road. This game showcased the importance of dominant pitching, clutch performances under pressure, and the ability to capitalize on key opportunities.
