MILWAUKEE -- Jacob Misiorowski delivered five shutout innings in his third major league start, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and their star pitcher Paul Skenes on Wednesday afternoon at American Family Field.
Misiorowski (3-0) was dominant, allowing just two hits and walking two while striking out eight over 74 pitches. His impressive performance lowered his earned run average to 1.13. Since being promoted from Triple-A Nashville on June 12, the 23-year-old right-hander has given up only one hit and two runs over 16 total innings in his three starts.
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes (4-7), also 23 and the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and a 2024 All-Star starter, struggled in the second inning, where he surrendered all four Brewers runs. He finished his outing having allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four over 78 pitches.
The Brewers offense capitalized in that decisive second inning, sending nine batters to the plate. After loading the bases with no outs, Joey Ortiz drove in the first run on a ground ball to Skenes. Eric Haase followed with a bloop double to score another. Sal Frelick added a third run with a grounder that resulted in a fielder’s choice, and Christian Yelich capped the four-run outburst with an RBI single.
The win secured a series victory for the Brewers, who took two of three games against the Pirates. Milwaukee improved to a season-high nine games over .500.
Pittsburgh's runs came late in the game. Oneil Cruz, returning to the lineup after being removed the previous night for not running hard, reached on a two-base error in the seventh and scored on a single by Tommy Pham. Spencer Horwitz added the Pirates' second run in the eighth with an RBI double.
Trevor Megill earned his 18th save of the season for the Brewers.
The Pirates mounted their most significant threat in the fourth inning against Misiorowski. Bryan Reynolds led off with the first hit off the young pitcher, followed by a walk to Spencer Horwitz. However, Misiorowski escaped the jam by inducing a double play from Nick Gonzales and striking out Oneil Cruz to end the inning.
Paul Skenes had a challenging 37-pitch second inning, giving up four hits, four runs, and a walk, which proved to be the difference in the game.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have not announced a starting pitcher for their next game, which is Friday's series opener against the New York Mets in Pittsburgh.
The Milwaukee Brewers will open a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, with left-hander José Quintana (5-2, 2.98 ERA) scheduled to start.
