The St. Louis Cardinals soared to a 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, powered by a five-run fifth inning and standout performances from several key players at Busch Stadium.
Nolan Arenado delivered the game's turning point with a bases-clearing, three-run double in the fifth inning, breaking the game open and giving the Cardinals a comfortable lead. Alec Burleson also contributed three hits, fueling the Cardinals' offense throughout the night.
Cardinals starter Sonny Gray improved to 14-8 on the season, pitching six innings with one run allowed on nine hits and striking out seven Brewers batters. This dominant performance helped the Cardinals earn their third win in five games.
Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski (5-3) allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings, ending the Brewers' three-game winning streak. Milwaukee had previously lost to the Cardinals in Milwaukee on Sunday.
Sal Frelick provided a bright spot for the Brewers, hitting his 11th home run of the season to right field to lead off the third inning and trim the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1. Frelick continued his recent hot streak, going 8-for-26 (.308) with two home runs and eight RBIs over his last seven games.
Lars Nootbaar put the Cardinals ahead early, knocking a two-out RBI single in the first inning. St. Louis padded its lead in the second, with Thomas Saggese scoring on a double-play grounder.
Brendan Donovan, Iván Herrera, and Alec Burleson set the table in the fifth with consecutive singles. After a pitching change, Arenado lined a 3-2 pitch down the left field line, clearing the bases and making it 5-1. Thomas Saggese later added an RBI double, and Jordan Walker capped the inning with a two-out RBI single. The Cardinals sent 10 men to the plate during the frame.
Despite the loss, Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch the NL Central was reduced to three after the Chicago Cubs fell to the Cincinnati Reds earlier in the evening.
The series continues on Saturday night, with Brewers right-hander Chad Patrick (3-8, 3.64 ERA) set to face Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas (8-10, 4.80 ERA).
The St. Louis Cardinals secured a commanding 7-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers, highlighted by a pivotal five-run fifth inning led by Nolan Arenado's three-run double. Alec Burleson's three hits and Sonny Gray's solid six-inning performance backed up the Cardinals' victory, while Sal Frelick's home run was a bright spot for Milwaukee.
