The St. Louis Cardinals secured a tight 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night to conclude their three-game set at Busch Stadium. Nolan Gorman delivered the decisive blow with a clutch RBI single in the seventh inning, helping the Cardinals clinch the series win.
The Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning when Thomas Saggese singled and Pedro Pagés followed with a two-run home run. Chicago responded in the fifth, as Matt Shaw tied the contest at 2-2 with a solo shot into the left field bullpen.
The key moment came in the bottom of the seventh, when Jordan Walker kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Walker stole second base, putting himself in scoring position. Nolan Gorman then singled to right field, plating Walker and giving the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage. That hit ended Shota Imanaga’s night on the mound for Chicago.
Sonny Gray improved to 11-5 with the win, pitching seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, struck out seven, and issued just one walk. JoJo Romero closed out the game for his third save, navigating traffic in the ninth inning with a walk and two singles allowed. Romero stranded Cubs runners and induced a game-ending fielder's choice off the bat of Matt Shaw.
Shota Imanaga (8-5) was charged with the loss despite a solid outing. Imanaga struck out nine with no walks over 6 2/3 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits.
In a crucial fourth-inning play, Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong singled and stole second base for his 30th steal of the year. However, Sonny Gray quickly erased the threat by picking him off at second with a throw to shortstop Masyn Winn.
St. Louis is now 13-2 in Sonny Gray’s 16 home starts, the top home record for any starting pitcher in MLB this season. Overall, the Cardinals are 18-6 when Gray takes the mound in 2025, tied for the best team record in starts for pitchers with 20 or more outings.
The Cardinals will send right-hander Miles Mikolas (6-9, 5.11 ERA) to the mound against the Colorado Rockies on Monday. The Cubs hit the road to face the Toronto Blue Jays, with José Berríos (8-4, 3.89 ERA) starting for Toronto on Tuesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals edged out the Chicago Cubs 3-2 in a hard-fought series finale, fueled by clutch hitting from Nolan Gorman and strong pitching by Sonny Gray and JoJo Romero. Key defensive plays helped the Cardinals maintain their impressive home record when Gray starts, keeping St. Louis in the mix as the season heads into its final weeks. Both teams now turn their focus to important road matchups as the playoff race intensifies.
