Pete Alonso powered the New York Mets to a commanding 12-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers, blasting two home runs to help secure a big win in Detroit. Juan Soto continued his impressive form, going deep once again, while rookie pitcher Nolan McLean delivered six strong innings for the Mets on Tuesday night.
Nolan McLean improved his record to 4-0, overcoming a tough start to retire his last 14 batters faced. He finished with two runs allowed on three hits and three walks, striking out seven. McLean made Mets history by becoming the first pitcher to win each of his first four major league appearances.
The Mets’ bats came alive with Luis Torrens launching a three-run homer as part of a five-run fourth inning. Pete Alonso started the scoring with a 435-foot home run in the first inning, and both he and Juan Soto hit back-to-back solo shots in the seventh, extending the Mets' lead to 12-2. Soto now has 37 home runs in his debut season with New York — including five over the last five games — while Alonso’s second blast marked his 33rd of the year. Jeff McNeil contributed three RBIs and collected three out of the Mets’ 17 hits, with Brandon Nimmo and Brett Baty also recording three-hit games.
Detroit took an early lead with two first-inning runs off a pair of two-out walks converted into RBI singles, but after that, McLean silenced the Tigers lineup. Starter Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-2) allowed six runs on five hits and two walks over four innings, in his first appearance since mid-August after dealing with injuries. Reliever Chris Paddack struggled in relief, surrendering six runs and eight hits in just 1 1/3 innings.
Luis Torrens’ three-run homer capped off a five-run fourth inning, putting the Mets ahead 6-2 and giving them a comfortable lead to work with.
Juan Soto continued to make history, homering after a game where he became the first modern-era player to hit both a go-ahead grand slam and a go-ahead triple that drove in multiple runs in a single game.
The series continues Wednesday with Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (11-6, 3.60 ERA) set to face Tigers righty Casey Mize (12-5, 3.95 ERA).
The New York Mets displayed their offensive prowess and pitching depth in a one-sided 12-5 win against the Detroit Tigers. Powered by home runs from Pete Alonso and Juan Soto, and a strong outing from rookie Nolan McLean, the Mets extended their wild card lead while the Tigers continued to struggle, losing seven of their last nine games. With the offense firing on all cylinders and McLean making franchise history, New York is in a strong position as they continue their playoff push.
