Danny Jansen's two-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning, powering the Tampa Bay Rays to a 7-5 comeback victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. The loss snapped the Mets' six-game winning streak.
Mets starter Clay Holmes exited after five innings holding a 5-1 lead. However, Paul Blackburn was charged with four runs while giving up hits to four of the five batters he faced in the sixth. Jake Mangum drove in two runs with a single to chase Blackburn, and José Caballaro followed with a run-scoring groundout against Max Kranick (3-2). Jansen then connected for a 389-foot homer to left field on a 2-2 pitch, giving the Rays the lead.
Eric Orze (1-0), who pitched briefly for the Mets last season, earned his first big league win by getting three outs in relief. He entered after Rays starter Taj Bradley exited without recording an out in the fifth inning, having allowed five runs, all of which were unearned.
Mason Montgomery, Garrett Cleavinger, Edwin Uceta, and Pete Fairbanks combined for four scoreless innings for the Rays bullpen. Fairbanks earned his 13th save of the season.
Aside from the dramatic sixth inning, Jonathan Aranda homered in the fourth inning for the Rays.
For the Mets, Starling Marte had three hits and three RBI. Tyrone Taylor hit into a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the fourth, and Juan Soto drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
The Mets stranded seven runners over the final four innings. New York lost at Citi Field for the first time since May 28, dropping their impressive home record to 27-8.
Fairbanks escaped a first-and-third jam in the ninth inning by getting Brett Baty to hit into a forceout and striking out Ronny Mauricio to seal the win.
The six runs allowed by the Mets in the sixth inning tied a season high, previously set on May 18 when the Yankees scored six times in the eighth inning of an 8-2 victory.
Mets right-hander Tylor Megill (5-4, 3.76 ERA) is scheduled to face Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen (5-4, 2.22 ERA) on Saturday.
