The Seattle Mariners are on the verge of reaching the American League Championship Series for the first time in 24 years after an impressive 8-4 win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of the AL Division Series.
Cal Raleigh delivered a crucial two-run home run, while Eugenio Suarez and J.P. Crawford each added solo shots to power the Mariners past the Tigers. This offensive surge helped Seattle secure a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
The Mariners now need just one more win to clinch a spot in the ALCS for the first time since 2001. Their first chance to advance comes in Game 4 at Comerica Park on Wednesday afternoon. If needed, a decisive Game 5 will be played in Seattle.
Seattle starting pitcher Logan Gilbert delivered a standout performance, allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over six impressive innings. Mariners manager Dan Wilson praised Gilbert’s control and dominance in the game.
Cal Raleigh, who led the majors with 60 regular season home runs, hammered a 391-foot shot in the ninth inning to extend Seattle’s lead. The Mariners consistently pressured the Tigers’ pitching, scoring multiple runs in the third, fourth, sixth, and eighth innings.
Key moments included Victor Robles leading off the third with a double and scoring on a Detroit error, followed by Randy Arozarena’s RBI single. Suarez blasted a 422-foot homer in the fourth, with Raleigh adding an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Tigers’ offense struggled for most of the night, managing only four hits through eight innings. In the ninth, they sparked a rally off reliever Caleb Ferguson, scoring three runs on a two-run double by Spencer Torkelson and an RBI single from Andy Ibanez. However, All-Star closer Andres Munoz entered to shut down Detroit’s comeback, inducing a flyout and a game-ending double play.
Detroit starter Jack Flaherty lasted just 3 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks. Defensively, the Tigers also struggled, committing costly errors that allowed Seattle to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The series continues Wednesday with Detroit sending right-hander Casey Mize to the mound, while Seattle counters with Bryce Miller. The Tigers will look to avoid elimination and force a Game 5, while the Mariners aim to close out the series and advance to the ALCS.
The Seattle Mariners dominated the Detroit Tigers with a combination of timely hitting and strong pitching, taking a 2-1 lead in the AL Division Series. Key home runs by Cal Raleigh, Eugenio Suarez, and J.P. Crawford powered Seattle's offense, while Logan Gilbert’s outstanding start kept Detroit at bay. The Mariners need just one more win to secure their first AL Championship Series appearance since 2001, while the Tigers will fight to extend their postseason. Don't miss Game 4 as Seattle looks to make franchise history.
