The St. Louis Cardinals delivered an impressive performance with a 5-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Michael McGreevy led the charge, tossing six scoreless innings and keeping the Cubs at bay throughout the game.
McGreevy improved his record to 4-2, allowing just six hits and one walk across six innings. The Cardinals' bullpen—Matt Svanson, JoJo Romero, and Riley O’Brien—combined for three shutout innings in relief, sealing the shutout win for St. Louis.
Matthew Boyd started for the Cubs, pitching five innings and giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out three. Despite his efforts, the Cubs suffered their fourth loss in six games.
Jordan Walker headlined the Cardinals' offense by hitting his fourth home run of the season off reliever Ryan Brasier in the sixth inning, extending the Cardinals’ lead to 4-0. The homer was Walker’s first since May 17 at Kansas City, and he drove in two runs on the night.
In the fifth inning, Iván Herrera contributed a sacrifice fly and Willson Contreras delivered an RBI single, helping the Cardinals pull ahead 3-0. St. Louis scored first in the second inning after Alec Burleson singled, Masyn Winn doubled, and Walker hit an RBI single that got past Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson.
Former All-Star catcher Yadier Molina was in uniform and present as a temporary coach in the Cardinals' dugout, offering experience and leadership to the team.
In a critical moment during the bottom of the second inning, Thomas Saggese was ruled safe at first base on a ground ball to Cubs pitcher Boyd, loading the bases with no outs after a successful challenge by Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. Boyd managed to escape the jam by striking out Pedro Pagés and inducing a double play from Garrett Hampson to end the inning without allowing a run.
Boyd gave up three runs in this start, after having allowed a total of just four earned runs in 28 innings across his previous five outings against St. Louis.
The series continues Saturday night as Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (8-5, 4.23 ERA) takes the mound against Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante (6-8, 4.57 ERA).
The St. Louis Cardinals secured a decisive 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs thanks to stellar pitching from Michael McGreevy and timely hitting from Jordan Walker and Willson Contreras. The Cubs' offense was silenced, with Matthew Boyd unable to repeat his prior success against St. Louis. With former catcher Yadier Molina offering support from the dugout, the Cardinals look to carry this strong momentum into the next game of the series.
