Pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo delivered a clutch, tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2. The high-stakes win came during the first game of the series held at Dodger Stadium on Monday night.
After Willson Contreras led off the ninth with a single against new Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart, pinch-runner Garrett Hampson advanced and eventually scored on Pozo’s soft single to right field. The Cardinals’ backup catcher celebrated thoroughly after recording just his second hit in his last eight games, bringing St. Louis a much-needed late breakthrough.
Starter Sonny Gray led the way for St. Louis, giving up just one hit over seven dominant innings. The Cardinals bullpen endured tense moments but allowed only two more Dodger hits to seal the victory. Riley O’Brien notched his first career win at age 30, despite giving up the lead in the eighth inning. JoJo Romero earned his second save after working around a leadoff single to Shohei Ohtani and retiring Max Muncy with two runners on for the final out.
Gray’s effort was matched by Dodgers ace Tyler Glasnow, who surrendered just three hits across seven innings and allowed only one run. Glasnow capped his outing by retiring 17 of his last 18 batters without yielding a hit, but the Dodgers' offense couldn’t capitalize.
Iván Herrera delivered a two-out homer for the Cardinals in the eighth, but Los Angeles answered when Teoscar Hernández doubled and scored the tying run on a series of groundouts. Masyn Winn broke a 32-game home run drought, helping to secure the Cardinals’ third win in their last nine games. Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run for the Dodgers, but it wasn’t enough as Los Angeles’ bats remained relatively quiet, dropping them to 7-9 since the All-Star break.
After Ohtani’s ninth-inning single, Lars Nootbaar made a spectacular diving catch along the right-field line, robbing Mookie Betts and keeping the Dodgers from mounting a rally.
Tyler Glasnow has gone winless in his last nine starts despite posting a 2.17 ERA since his return. His command and dominance have kept the Dodgers close, but run support has eluded him.
The series continues on Tuesday, with Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.83 ERA) scheduled to pitch for St. Louis against Emmet Sheehan (2-2, 3.60 ERA) for Los Angeles.
The St. Louis Cardinals secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers with Yohel Pozo’s decisive ninth-inning RBI single. Standout pitching performances from Sonny Gray and Tyler Glasnow kept the game tight, while clutch hitting and key defensive plays determined the outcome. The Dodgers, still leading the NL West, continue to struggle post All-Star break as the series remains up for grabs.
