The Cleveland Guardians delivered a powerful performance at Fenway Park, defeating the Boston Red Sox 8-1 and preventing a three-game sweep. Gabriel Arias launched a two-run home run, igniting a six-run rally in the second inning that gave Cleveland a sizable early lead over a mistake-prone Red Sox squad.
Steven Kwan set the tone for Cleveland’s offense with three hits and two runs scored. José Ramírez contributed two RBI, while Arias’ 10th homer of the season fueled the big second inning. Rookie left-hander Joey Cantillo earned the win after pitching six strong innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out seven.
Boston struggled defensively, surrendering two wild pitches and committing two crucial errors in the second inning. The Red Sox began the day already leading the majors with 103 errors this season, and their defensive shortcomings continued to haunt them against the Guardians.
Kwan opened the game with a double off Boston’s opener, Brennan Bernardino, and scored moments later on a Ramírez groundout. The rough second inning saw Bo Naylor’s leadoff double, followed by Arias’ home run off Jordan Hicks. After Hicks allowed two more hits, Steven Matz entered and gave up an RBI single to Kwan, making it 4-0. Further Guardians runs scored due to a catcher interference call against Connor Wong, a wild pitch, and a misplayed fly ball by left fielder Jarren Duran.
Boston’s only highlight was a two-out RBI single from Nick Sogard in the fourth inning to bring in Rob Refsnyder. Despite the loss, the Red Sox still claimed the season series over Cleveland, 4-2.
Brennan Bernardino appeared in his 54th game of the season and made his third start, but managed just two outs. Remarkably, after finishing Tuesday’s game on the mound, Bernardino became the first Red Sox pitcher since 1987 to finish a game and start the next game in the same season.
Steven Kwan continues to impress at Fenway Park, now with hits in 11 of 13 career games at the venue — batting an impressive .355 (22-for-62).
The Guardians begin a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. Left-hander Logan Allen (7-10, 4.42 ERA) is slated to start for Cleveland, facing Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot (10-10, 3.70 ERA). The Red Sox will have a day off before traveling to Arizona for a Friday night matchup against the Diamondbacks.
The Cleveland Guardians snapped a potential sweep with an 8-1 rout of the Boston Red Sox, capitalizing on Boston’s defensive mistakes and strong performances from Steven Kwan, Gabriel Arias, and Joey Cantillo. Cleveland’s early offensive outburst and solid pitching helped them avoid a sweep and build momentum as they head into their next series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
