The San Diego Padres continued their hot streak, securing a 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Petco Park. This win clinched the series for the Padres, who have now won 11 of their last 14 games as they pursue the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings.
Padres starter Dylan Cease was dominant through six innings, allowing just three singles and a walk as he kept the Red Sox scoreless into the seventh inning. Cease improved to 5-10 on the season, ending his night with four hits, four runs (two earned), seven strikeouts, and two walks.
Boston showed life in the top of the seventh when Cease gave up a walk to Jarren Duran and a single to Trevor Story. Padres All-Star Jason Adam entered the game and immediately hit Masataka Yoshida to load the bases. The Red Sox scored two runs following a fielding error by shortstop Xander Bogaerts on a grounder by Romy Gonzalez. Wilyer Abreu then singled to reload the bases, but Adam struck out Ceddanne Rafaela and pinch-hitter Abraham Toro. Reliever Adrian Morejon came in and struck out rookie Roman Anthony to escape the jam.
San Diego produced its first five runs with two outs, all charged to Boston starter Brayan Bello, who dropped to 8-6 on the year. Luis Arraez hit a two-run double in the third, Fernando Tatis Jr. added an RBI single in the fifth, and Xander Bogaerts contributed a sixth-inning single before stealing his 19th base of the season, matching his single-season career high. Bello later walked the bases full and was replaced by Chris Murphy, who then issued a walk to Jake Cronenworth, giving the Padres a 5-0 lead.
The pivotal moment of the game came when Adrian Morejon struck out Roman Anthony to end the seventh inning, stopping a potential Red Sox rally.
Xander Bogaerts matched his single-season career high with his 19th stolen base. Bogaerts played for Boston from 2013-2022 before joining the Padres.
The Boston Red Sox head to Houston to begin a three-game series with Garrett Crochet scheduled to start on Monday night. The Padres will travel to San Francisco but have not yet named their starting pitcher for Monday's matchup with the Giants.
The San Diego Padres topped the Boston Red Sox 6-2, winning the series thanks to a solid outing from Dylan Cease and key offensive contributions in high-leverage situations. The Padres' bullpen delivered in critical moments, and Xander Bogaerts matched a personal milestone against his former team. As the Padres keep pace in the NL West race, both teams now look ahead to tough road matchups as the season heats up.
