Houston Astros Hold Off White Sox 4-3 Behind Altuve, Paredes

Houston, TX – The Houston Astros defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Thursday night.

Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Jose Altuve doubled twice with two RBI to lead the Astros offense.

The Astros held a 4-2 lead going into the ninth inning. Mike Tauchman hit a solo home run off closer Josh Hader to cut the deficit to one run. Miguel Vargas followed with a double off the wall in left field that narrowly missed being a game-tying home run.

However, Hader secured the save by striking out Austin Slater, improving his record to 18-for-18 in save opportunities this season.

Paredes hit his solo shot to left-center off White Sox starter Davis Martin in the fifth inning, extending Houston's lead to 4-2. Martin (2-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings with five strikeouts.

Astros starter Framber Valdez (7-4) earned the win, giving up two runs on seven hits over five innings. Valdez struck out a season-high 12 batters.

For the White Sox, Edgar Quero had three hits and two RBI. Miguel Vargas collected two doubles and a triple. The loss dropped Chicago's road record to 7-28.

Jose Altuve, playing left field, made a leaping catch near the wall in the seventh inning to rob Chase Meidroth of extra bases.

Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes appeared to injure his leg in the seventh inning and was replaced defensively in the eighth. Manager Joe Espada stated Paredes has an unspecified left hamstring injury but the team does not believe it is serious. Further updates are expected Friday.
