The Houston Astros continued their downward spiral, falling 5-1 to the Oakland Athletics at Sutter Health Park. The Astros' offense was held to just three hits as Jeffrey Springs and three Athletics relievers controlled the game from the mound.
With this defeat, Houston drops to an 84-73 record, extending their losing streak to four games. The Astros now trail AL West leader Seattle by four games and sit one game behind Detroit for the final American League wild-card spot.
Jeffrey Springs improved to an 11-11 record after pitching five strong innings, surrendering only one run on three hits and two walks. The Athletics bullpen — Tyler Ferguson, Justin Sterner, and Michael Kelly — combined for four innings of hitless relief, effectively shutting down any hope of a Houston comeback.
Jacob Wilson was a standout for Oakland, going 2 for 2 with an RBI and scoring twice.
Cristian Javier took the loss for Houston, allowing four runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings. Oakland capitalized early, with Nick Kurtz doubling in the first inning and scoring on a fielding error by Javier. The A’s continued to add runs, with Wilson doubling and scoring in the fourth, and Christian Walker scoring in the second after reaching base with a leadoff single.
In the fifth inning, Brett Harris led off with a double and scored on a two-out double from Tyler Soderstrom. After a pitching change and a walk to Brent Rooker, Wilson delivered another RBI single, pushing Oakland’s lead to 4-1 and putting the game out of reach for Houston.
The Astros went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and stranded five runners on base, underscoring their offensive woes.
The Astros have yet to announce their starting pitcher for the next game against the Athletics. Oakland is scheduled to start Luis Severino, who holds a 7-11 record with a 4.72 ERA.
The Houston Astros' playoff hopes suffered another blow as stellar pitching by the Oakland Athletics limited them to just three hits in a 5-1 defeat. While Houston’s offense faltered and their pitching couldn't hold off Oakland’s steady attack, the loss places them further behind in both the AL West and wild-card race. As the Astros look to break their losing streak, the upcoming matchup with Oakland becomes even more critical for their postseason aspirations.
