The Houston Astros powered past the Texas Rangers with an emphatic 11-0 shutout on Saturday night in Arlington, Texas. Stellar pitching from Hunter Brown and a pair of home runs propelled the Astros to a vital AL West division win.
With this victory, the Astros improve to a 78-65 record and stretch their lead in the division to 3.5 games over the Seattle Mariners. The Rangers, now 73-70, fall 1.5 games behind Seattle for the American League’s final wild card spot.
Hunter Brown (11-7) delivered a masterful performance, tossing six scoreless innings and matching his career-high 107 pitches. He allowed just four singles and three walks while striking out eight. Brown’s impressive 2.25 ERA is now second-best in the American League.
Jacob deGrom (11-7), the Rangers' ace, surrendered three runs over 5 1/3 innings. His ERA increased to 2.78, ranking fourth in the league. DeGrom, Texas’ lone All-Star this season, has now won just once in his last seven starts. These two pitchers previously faced off on May 15 in a 1-0 pitchers' duel won by deGrom.
Christian Walker broke out of a slump against deGrom, launching a solo home run in the third inning after coming into the game 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts against the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Yordan Alvarez added another solo blast in the fifth, his third homer in 11 games since returning from a fractured right hand that kept him out for 100 games.
The Astros continued to pile on late, with Walker contributing an RBI double and Alvarez adding an RBI single as Houston scored three runs in the eighth and exploded for five more in the ninth inning.
In the second inning, Hunter Brown faced his toughest challenge, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam by striking out Ezequiel Duran and inducing a flyout from Josh Smith. That pivotal moment helped preserve the scoreless tie early and set the tone for the rest of the game.
The Rangers struggled with runners in scoring position, finishing 0-for-9 in those situations. This continued a trend from the previous night, when Texas went 1-for-14, with the lone hit being a walk-off single by Dustin Harris in the 12th inning.
The series finale on Sunday afternoon will feature Astros right-hander Luis Garcia (1-0, 4.50 ERA) facing Rangers left-hander Patrick Corbin (7-9, 4.48 ERA). Garcia recently returned from Tommy John surgery and won his first start since May 1, 2023, after battling through setbacks in his rehab.
The Houston Astros made a statement with a commanding 11-0 victory over the Texas Rangers, highlighted by Hunter Brown's shutout pitching and home runs from Christian Walker and Yordan Alvarez. With this win, the Astros solidified their lead in the AL West and showcased both pitching prowess and offensive depth as the postseason race heats up. The Rangers will look to bounce back and stay in the wild card hunt as the series concludes.
