Jack Flaherty delivered a stellar performance on the mound, striking out nine batters across seven scoreless innings as the Detroit Tigers shut out the Houston Astros 10-0 on Monday night.
The Tigers showcased their power at the plate with home runs from Wenceel Pérez, Riley Greene, Trey Sweeney, and Colt Keith. Riding the momentum of a successful 5-2 road trip, Detroit's offense erupted with a strong display at home.
Flaherty improved to 7-12 on the season, allowing only three hits and one walk. His dominant outing secured his second win in his last 12 starts. Former closer Alex Lange returned to the mound for his first MLB appearance since May 22, 2024, pitching a scoreless ninth inning after recovering from lat surgery.
Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti (1-4) surrendered five runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings. The Astros loaded the bases in the first inning but were unable to capitalize, as Victor Caratini lined out to end the threat. Flaherty continued to silence Houston's bats, allowing just two more runners—one hit by pitch and a single—through his seven innings of work.
Pérez put the Tigers on the board in the fourth inning with his 10th home run. The Tigers added four more runs in the fifth. In the sixth, Trey Sweeney tripled and scored on Colt Keith's sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 6-0. Sweeney then launched a three-run homer in the seventh inning, with Keith adding a solo shot two batters later. Outfielder Chas McCormick pitched a scoreless eighth for the Astros in an unusual pitching appearance.
The Tigers missed an early opportunity to break the game open in the second inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, Dillon Dingler hit a high fly ball to left field that bounced off the fence. The runners, mistakenly believing it was a home run, advanced only one base each. Arrighetti then struck out Sweeney, and Javier Báez hit into a double play, ending the inning.
Astros infielder Gleyber Torres celebrated his 1,000th major league game milestone. He entered the contest with a .265 batting average, 151 home runs, 499 RBI, and 57 stolen bases.
The series continues Tuesday night as Tigers ace left-hander Tarik Skubal (11-3, 2.42 ERA) faces Houston-native right-hander Hunter Brown (10-5, 2.45 ERA) in game two of the three-game set.
The Detroit Tigers seized control in a commanding 10-0 victory over the Houston Astros, powered by dominant pitching from Jack Flaherty and four home runs from their offense. The shutout win highlights Detroit’s ongoing momentum, while Houston looks to bounce back in the next matchup. The teams return to the field for a pivotal game two with ace pitchers set to take the mound in what promises to be an exciting continuation of the series.
