Jose Altuve powered the Houston Astros to a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers by smashing a two-run home run, while Jeremy Peña hit both a homer and a double, completing a three-game sweep at Minute Maid Park.
The Astros’ victory, combined with a Seattle Mariners loss to Kansas City, allowed Houston to move a half-game ahead of Seattle for first place in the American League West.
After the Rangers tied the score at 2-2, Carlos Correa singled to start the third inning. Altuve followed with a two-run homer off Jacob deGrom, sending the ball into the left-field seats and putting Houston up 4-2. This blast marked Altuve’s 37th home run and 100th RBI against Texas—his highest totals against any opponent.
Jeremy Peña extended Houston’s lead further, driving a home run into the right field stands to lead off the fifth inning, making it 5-2.
Cristian Javier (2-3) delivered a strong outing for Houston, allowing just five hits and two runs in six innings. He has now made seven starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. Bryan King closed the door with a scoreless ninth to secure his second save.
For Texas, Jacob deGrom (12-8) surrendered six hits and matched a season-high by allowing five runs over five innings, with Houston forcing him to throw 35 pitches in a grueling first inning.
Peña’s leadoff double in the first inning was followed by a Correa single. With two outs, Yainer Diaz’s single knocked in both runners to put Houston on the board early.
The Rangers responded in the second inning when Alejandro Osuna singled, stole second, and scored on Josh Jung’s RBI double. Cody Freeman’s single drove home Jung, knotting the score at 2-2 before Houston took control.
The Rangers struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2 for 8, and have now lost four straight games.
Jose Altuve’s decisive two-run home run in the third inning gave the Astros a lead they would not relinquish.
With this win, the Astros take a 7-6 lead in the season series over the Rangers, keeping the Silver Boot trophy in Houston for another year. The Astros have claimed the season series every year since 2017.
Both teams have a day off on Thursday. The Rangers will host the Miami Marlins to open a three-game series on Friday, while the Mariners head to Houston for a pivotal division matchup.
The Astros continued their dominance over the Rangers, securing a key sweep to leap into first place in the AL West. Altuve and Peña provided the offensive firepower, while the Houston pitching staff limited the Rangers’ opportunities. Houston maintains control of the Silver Boot and looks poised for a strong finish as the season winds down.
