The Boston Red Sox surged to an early lead and held off a late rally from the New York Yankees for a crucial 6-4 victory on Sunday night at Fenway Park. Carlos Narváez sparked a six-run first inning with a solo home run, helping Boston avoid a three-game sweep against their AL East rivals.
Boston's bats came alive right out of the gate, with the first five hitters collecting hits. Romy Gonzalez hit an RBI double, while Alex Bregman and Nathaniel Lowe each contributed run-scoring singles. The offensive onslaught was capped off by Narváez’s solo shot, chasing Yankees starter Will Warren early. By the end of the first inning, the Red Sox had built a commanding 6-0 lead.
Garrett Crochet matched his season high with 12 strikeouts across six strong innings, surrendering only three runs on five hits and issuing one walk. He improved to 16-5 on the year, anchoring Boston with a gutsy performance. Aroldis Chapman secured the victory with his 30th save in 32 tries after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Despite falling behind early, the Yankees clawed their way back. Aaron Judge launched his 48th home run of the season in the fifth inning, a two-run blast that trimmed Boston’s lead to 6-3. Amed Rosario added a two-run homer and José Caballero hit a solo shot, but New York couldn’t close the gap. Judge recorded his 362nd career homer earlier in the series, surpassing Joe DiMaggio for fourth on the Yankees’ all-time list.
In the eighth inning, after Aaron Judge singled off the Green Monster, Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock responded with three consecutive strikeouts to squash the Yankees' momentum and preserve the Red Sox’s lead.
Boston was 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the first two games of the series but went 3-for-3 in its first three at-bats in the opening inning of Sunday’s game.
With this win, the Red Sox halted a three-game losing streak and are now just 1½ games behind New York for the American League’s top wild card spot. The Yankees, runners-up in the division, now trail AL East-leading Toronto by four games. Boston also secured a 9-4 advantage in the season series against the Yankees.
Yankees: Left-hander Carlos Rodón (16-8, 3.11 ERA) is slated to start Monday night in Minnesota against Twins right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson (6-4, 4.58 ERA).
Red Sox: Athletics left-hander Jeffrey Springs (10-11, 4.28 ERA) starts Tuesday night's series opener at Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox broke out of their slump with a fast start, taking down the New York Yankees 6-4 in a pivotal AL East clash. Carlos Narváez’s homer highlighted a six-run first, while Garrett Crochet’s 12 strikeouts helped fend off a New York comeback. The Red Sox cut into the Yankees’ wild card lead and strengthened their playoff hopes, setting up a dramatic finish in the race for October. Both teams now look ahead to critical matchups as the regular season winds down.
