The Boston Red Sox secured a dramatic 5-4 extra-innings victory over the Oakland Athletics, marking their American League-leading 11th walk-off win of the season. The contest, held at Fenway Park, saw pinch-hitter Nick Sogard deliver a 10th-inning infield grounder to drive home Nate Eaton with the winning run.
The Red Sox began the bottom of the 10th with Nate Eaton serving as the designated runner at second base. After Carlos Narvaez executed a successful sacrifice bunt to move Eaton to third, Sogard’s grounder enabled Eaton to slide head-first across home plate, narrowly avoiding the tag by catcher Shea Langeliers and clinching the victory for Boston.
Reliever Chris Murphy (3-0) earned the win for Boston, recording one out in the 10th inning. Michael Kelly (4-4) suffered the defeat for Oakland.
Boston got on the scoreboard early, with Masataka Yoshida singling in a run in the first inning. Rob Refsnyder added to the lead in the second with a solo home run, his ninth of the season, putting the Red Sox up 2-1. The Athletics answered in the second when Darell Hernaiz brought home Lawrence Butler on a sacrifice fly. Hernaiz matched his career high with three RBIs in the game, including a pivotal two-run single during a three-run fifth inning for Oakland.
In the fifth, the Athletics loaded the bases, with Butler drawing a walk to force in a run before Hernaiz’s two-run single gave them a 4-2 lead. Boston responded with a run in the fifth and tied the score in the sixth.
Trevor Story attempted to continue his impressive stealing streak but was thrown out at second base to end the eighth inning. It was his first caught stealing of the year after 31 consecutive successful stolen base attempts, the longest streak to start a season in the American League since 1920.
In the top of the fifth, with two outs and the bases loaded, Boston left-hander Justin Wilson allowed a two-run single to Darell Hernaiz, giving the Athletics a two-run cushion. Boston looked poised to respond in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs, but managed just one run despite an Oakland error.
The Red Sox, who are now 21-26 in one-run games this season, went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Through the first five games of their current six-game homestand, Boston is just 7-for-38 (.184) in these situations.
The Athletics and Red Sox will conclude their season series on Thursday afternoon. Oakland plans to start right-hander J.T. Ginn (3-6, 4.69 ERA) against Boston’s right-hander Brayan Bello (11-7, 3.25 ERA).
The Boston Red Sox claimed a hard-fought 5-4 win over the Athletics in 10 innings, highlighted by Nick Sogard’s walk-off grounder and Nate Eaton’s aggressive baserunning. Darell Hernaiz shined for Oakland with three RBIs. Despite struggles with runners in scoring position, Boston’s resilience secured another thrilling finish and extended their dominance in close games at Fenway Park.
