BOSTON — Roman Anthony, one of baseball's top prospects, recorded his first major league hit with a two-run double and made a sliding catch in right field, contributing significantly to the Boston Red Sox's 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.
Playing one night after his MLB debut, where he went hitless and committed an error in an 11-inning loss, Anthony finished 1 for 4. His family was in the stands to witness his milestone hit, a sharp double to left in the first inning that gave Boston a 2-0 lead. Trevor Story also had a strong game for the Red Sox with two hits, including a solo home run that cleared the Green Monster and landed on Lansdowne Street.
Lucas Giolito earned his first win in five starts. Giolito, who had allowed seven runs in his previous start (four before recording an out), limited Tampa Bay to just one unearned run over six innings. The run scored following his own errant pickoff throw. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out four, improving his record to 2-1.
Greg Weissert pitched the ninth inning to secure his first save of the season.
For the Rays, Ryan Pepio took the loss (3-6). He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out nine batters.
Boston established the lead for good in the first inning. Rafael Devers singled with one out, advanced to third on Carlos Narváez's double, and scored when Roman Anthony hit his two-run double to left field.
Trevor Story is currently on a streak of four consecutive multihit games. His batting average stood at .267 on June 5 but had fallen to .217 after hitting just .141 over the following month before this recent surge.
The series finale will feature Tampa Bay right-hander Zack Littell (6-5) facing Boston right-hander Walker Buehler (4-4).
